IELTS Grammar: Past Tense Mistakes

One of the most common errors I hear during IELTS speaking practice is using present tense instead of past tense.

Something like the following sentence:

Last Saturday my friends and I go to the store and buy ice cream.

Can you find the mistakes with the verb tenses? (Hint: “go” and “buy”)

It looks quite easy, but it’s surprisingly common even among upper-intermediate (IELTS 6+) learners.

Have you noticed this in your own speech? Try to fix it if you do!
