The “1-2 and Stop” is a simple technique you can use to give perfect IELTS Speaking Part 1 answers, every time. It works because it forces you to give strong, confident answers without getting stuck for words.
Many of my students have used this technique to make a great first impression on the IELTS examiner and get ready for IELTS Speaking Parts 2 and 3.
Here’s how it works:
- Answer the examiner’s question by paraphrasing the question and including your answer.
- Support your answer with a reason or an example.
- STOP TALKING and let the examiner ask his/her next question.
Sample Questions and Answers
Let’s look at a few example questions from the British Council IELTS Site. I’ve colored the answers to show you how I use the “1-2 and STOP” technique.
Topic: Let’s talk about your home town or village
Question 1: What kind of place is it?
A: Well, the city I’m from is the largest in my country so we have a variety of people from around the world there to do business. It’s quite cosmopolitan. STOP
Question 2: What’s the most interesting part of your town/village?
A: The most exciting area is definitely the shopping district. There are so many stores from brand names like Gucchi to small, local merchants selling freshly made food. STOP
Question 3: What kind of jobs do the people in your town/village do?
A: It’s a big city so people have a variety of different jobs. We have everything: salesmen, teachers, firefighters, politicians, even farmers. STOP
Question 4: Would you say it’s a good place to live? (why?)
A: Actually, I don’t think it’s a very nice place to live. Maybe because it’s such a big city and everyone living there is always so busy, in general the people don’t seem too happy. STOP
Today’s Homework:
In order to become skilled at the “1-2 and Stop” technique you need to practice. Here are 5 sample questions to start with:

Hometown is the town or city where you were born and lived when you were young.
I like many colours. I use different colours in my everyday life. But white is my favorite colour. Because it suits me well. Other reasons for appreciating white colour are that it is holy colour and it is associated with many religions
I like listening music in my spare time because it’s helps to me in many ways like as remove stress,depressed and so on
Yes, definitely I like sports because of my favorite game is cricket and I play cricket everyday
At the moment i am free because of i recently completed my +2
1-my favourite color is green as it gives me the hope and satisfaction .
2-In my spare , I had to read books , listen slow music and mostly study in new researches belong my work
